2008 Kanabec County Fair Demo Derby

 

 

General Rules:

1. Drivers run at their own risk

2. Drivers must be 16 years or older, drivers under 18 must have notarized written consent of parent or guardian.

3. No one under the age of 16 allowed in the pit area – must have picture ID for proof of age.

4. No drinking of alcoholic beverages before or during derby and no alcohol in pit area.

5. Only derby vehicle and one tow vehicle in pits – no spectator parking in pit area.

6. All cars not removed by 9:00 a.m. the following day will become property of the Kanabec County Fair.

7. Drivers must wear a seat belt or harness, helmet, and eye protection at all times when operating vehicle – long sleeves or jacket and jeans are required, and/or fire suit is highly recommended.

8. No hot rodding in the pits, keep it at an idle

9. DO NOT hit the driver’s door – it sometimes happens, but if it looks intentional or careless (judges decision), you will be disqualified.

10. 2 fires in one heat and you are done.

11. You are given 1 minute for an aggressive hit, 1 minute for restarts and 1 minute if you are hung up – being hit, hitting the wall, or hitting a disabled vehicle does not count. Final placing will be determined by last aggressive hit. If we have a tie for any placing, prize money will be added together and split in half, coin flip for trophies.

12. NO sandbagging or holding!!!!! You will be disqualified.

13. *All cars must enter North West Pit gate of fairgrounds, Gates Close one half hour before event. Pit will be open from 3:00p.m. – 7:00 p.m. for inspection.

14. Judges reserve the right to disqualify any and/or all latecomers.

15. Driver and pit person must be present during inspection

16. All drivers and crewmembers must attend the drivers meeting

17. Judges reserve the right to re-inspect and disqualify any vehicle during the event

18. Any harassment of Judges, or Kanabec County Fair members or Pit Workers by drivers or pit people, will result in disqualification and be banned from any further Kanabec County Fair sponsored event for 13 months.

19. Disqualification results in forfeiture of entry fee

20. *Any driver protesting another vehicle in their class, must do so before the pit meeting. Officials will inspect the vehicle being protested and the vehicle of the person filing the protest. Any decision reached by the officials will be final. Derby officials reserve the right to re-inspect any vehicle, before, during or after the derby. There will be a protest Fee of $50.00! If nothing is found, $25.00 will go to protested vehicle driver, remaining $25 will be forfeited.

22. ALL vehicles must have a FIRE EXTINGUISHER in their pit area. We will be checking! This is required by insurance and the fire department.

GENERAL PREPARATION RULES:  These rules apply to all classes!!!!!

 

  1. All glass, plastic, and pot metal must be removed from the vehicle – nothing in the bottom of doors or trunks and all outside hardware must be removed – i.e. mirrors, lights, chrome, moldings, fiber glass, etc.
  2. All flammable materials inside the cab must be removed except necessary safety padding and seat.
  3. All vehicles must have a drivers seat securely mounted to the floor
  4. Safety padding is recommended around the driver’s area
  5. All vehicles must exhibit the ability to stop
  6. Vehicles must be safe to run and drive
  7. No dirty or vulgar language on vehicle
  8. Must have min 12” x 12” roof sign securely fastened with vehicle number visible or it will NOT run
  9. Vehicles may add protection over the driver’s window. Strongly recommended to put one or two bars from dash to roof in front window area.
  10. Original gas tanks must be removed from the vehicle.
  11. *A steel gas tank must be used and be bolted or welded to the floor. A steel frame may be welded to floor for mounting tank. – No ratchet straps, bungee cords or zip ties are allowed.  All tanks must have a secure fitting for gas line to be clamped to. Drilling hole and silicone gas line in NOT allowed. NO PLASTIC TANKS!!!

  13. Your fuel line must be inside the cab of the car. Can not go down through the floor and along the frame rail.
  14. A maximum tank size of 6 gallons of fuel may be used.
  15. Electric fuel pumps are allowed
  16. A maximum of 2 standard automotive or 1 large industrial battery may be used.
  17. *Batteries must be securely mounted inside the cab and covered. Steel box or steel frame for battery to sit in/on is required. Battery must be covered with a rubber mat.
  18. Steel transmission coolers will be allowed.
  19. Metal, steel braided, or approved transmission lines must be used – No fuel or low pressure lines may be used.
  20. Any bolts from seats, battery boxes, fuel tanks, transmission coolers, etc that extend through the frame or sub-frame will count as a body mount – please refer to the class rules for how many are allowed.
  21. *Floor shifters and headers are allowed. Headers must point up to the sky Tip outs allowed on top.
  22. Trailer hitches must be completely removed.
  23. If bumpers are removed, the bumper prods must be removed or trimmed.
  24. Any attempt to cover frames by buffing, grinding, coating with grease, glue, mud, etc. will result in immediate disqualification.
  25. Minimal pre-bending of body is allowed – No wedging, or packing allowed – must have access to inspect.
  26. Hoods must be open for inspection
  27. A 12” x 12” min hole must be cut in hood above the carburetor.
  28. No split rims or studded tires
  29. Foam filled, doubled tires, and valve stem protectors are allowed.
  30. No snow, bar, or lug tires on drive wheels, regardless of tread condition
  31. Radiators and Radii-barrels must have a secured vent down and filled with water or ice only.
  32. Any combination of engine, transmission, and rear end may be used on the vehicle.
  33. Bends or bubbles on the frame or sub-frame may be fixed on pre-ran vehicles – it may not extend more than 2” past the affected area. The frame may be patched with ¼” or thinner material. Any questions on the rules call Pete at 320-358-0865 or e-mail-- www.hpete42@netzero.net

 Full-Size Cars - 1980 & Newer

 

  1. All cars must be stock. Any 1980 and newer cars.
  2. *Doors can be chained or welded shut. 4 chains or 4”x4” pads per door on 4 doors or 6 chains or 4”x4” pads on 2 doors. Chains to be min 5/16” single loop, 24” long max.
  3. Hoods can be secured in up to 6 places using either or combination of- maximum ¾” diameter rods, or 5/16” single loop chains. Rods or chains can go through/around frame. If using rods, washers to be a max of 4”x4”.
  4. Trunks can be secured in up to 4 places using either or combination of – maximum ¾” diameter rods, or 5/16” single loop chains. Rods or chains can go through/around frame. If using rods, washers to be a max of 4”x4”. Station Wagons can patch weld tailgate with 6 – 4”x4” pads
  5. Driver’s door may be welded shut. A driver’s side door bar is strongly recommended, not to exceed 1” out from body and no more than 4” past door seams.
  6. Stiffening of suspension allowed.
  7. *Radiators must be in stock position. You may choose to have no cooling system at all. Radii Barrels allowed, must be at least 1” inside frame rails 3” max outside dimension. Bolted or welded to core support only. May add 2 flat straps to core support only to hold barrel.
  8. No welding on any part of car except:

a. Bumpers may be welded on. You may move bumpers back to frame and weld. You can weld factory bumper brackets, no adding of iron to do this.

       b. Rear ends

  1. Absolutely no seam welding on any part of the body or frame will be allowed.
  2. For driver’s safety only, a brace may be installed behind the driver’s seat. It must run diagonally only from window post to rocker, you may add kicker or an X. It must be no larger than 4” pipe or tubing, thick walled material, and plates on each end no bigger than 6”x6”.
  3. Front Dash bar is also permitted. It must be no larger than 4” pipe or tubing, thick walled material, and plates on each end no bigger than 6”x6”.
  4. Passenger side door kicker maybe added from dash bar to cross bracing or rocker. No other steel may be attached to this kicker.
  5. If factory floor is gone (rusted), you may weld in floor not to exceed 1/8” thickness but can not be welded to sub frame. Judges will have a drill and if it is questionable it will be checked.
  6. Floors may be bolted to sub frame in up to 4 places. Using a max. of ¾” diameter rod/bolts and 5”x5” plates/washers.
  7. Airbags MUST be de-activated before race.

 Stock Full-size Trucks and Mini Trucks/Vans/SUV’s (Bronco II’s, S-10 Blazers)

 

1.       ½ tons to 1 tons Pickups only in Full size class. No dually’s, 4 x 4’s allowed with front drive shaft removed.

2.       Mini Trucks: Also allowed are Mini Vans and Mini SUV’s (Bronco II’s, S-10 Blazers, etc.) V-8’s are allowed.

3.       Driver’s door may be reinforced with steel not to extend more than 1” from original body or 4” beyond door seams.

4.       Under floor on driver’s side only you may run channel or angle from frame to rocker between the firewall and back of driver’s seat.

5.       May install dash pipe no larger than 4” diameter thick walled pipe with 6”x6” pads on each end between door posts. A kicker may be added from dash pipe to passenger rocker, no larger than 4” diameter with 6”x6” pad on end. A pipe may be added behind the seat.

6.       Cab and box may be bolted down with no more than 8-3/4” diameter bolts between cab and box. Washers can not exceed 6” diameter. Mini SUV’s/Vans can only have up to 4 additional bolts ¾” dia with 6” dia washers.

7.       *Box may be connected to cab with any of the following ways -  4” or less wide strap on the sides, or 2 ¾” dia. Bolts with 4”x4” washers, or weld a 2”x2” angle or 2” dia pipe on top of front edge of box to cab.

8.       *Tailgates can be welded on in stock position or 5/16” min. single loop chains.- We don’t want it falling off!!!

9.       *Doors can be tied shut with 5/16” single loop chains or welded.

10.   *Tail light hole Maybe covered not exceed 3” beyond each side of the light hole.

11.   May run a radiator support between frame rails under radiator no bigger than ¼”x2”x4”.

12.   *Stock radiators or radii barrel may be used. Radii barrel must be at least 1” inside frame rails (top and bottom) bolted or welded to core support only. The barrel can be a max 3” outside thickness and must be vented down. 2 additional flat straps may be added to core support only to attach barrel.

13.   *Hoods: All hoods must have a 12” min. hole over the carburetor. You may use 6- 5/16” single loop chains or 6-3/4” diameter rods to hold down hood. Rods and chains may go to frame. Washers to be a max of 5”x5” diameter. Two straps allowed from front hood to bottom of radiator support or bumper which must not exceed 2”x1/4”. Must be bolted some place for open hood inspection.

14.   Rims: No split rims……No welded split rims!!!!!

15.   If floor is not there, you may weld in a floor not to exceed 1/8” thickness and may not be attached to the frame. Judges will have a drill and if it is a question, it will be checked.

16.   Gas tanks: Located in Box in front of rear axle. Follow general preparation rules.

17.   Engines: Engine in vehicle does not have to be of the same manufacture as the body. Motor mounts may be welded.  Two additional straps may be used, but must be behind water pump pulley but in front of carburetor. No bigger than ¼”x2”x24” or 2 chains min 5/16” single loop, 24” long.

18.   *You may run only 2 – 2”x2”x1/4” angle or tubing max from top of core support to frame, no further back than center of front axle, to hold core support up. A 2”x2”x1/4” angle or tubing may be added to top of core support only.

19.   * Front Bumper may be any automotive bumper or can be up to 4” max size tube or channel, BUT MUST have a factory Bumper Skin securely fastened/welded to steel.

20.   Follow all general preparation rules as they apply.

21.   Rear bumpers that are removed, frame rails need to be capped using a max of 4” channel or angle not to extend further than the frame rail width.

Compact Car Class:

 1.      Wheel base must be 103” or less and engine must be 4 or 6 cylinder

2.      Driver’s door may be reinforced with steel not to extend more than 1” from original body or 4” past either end of door.

3.      Doors must be either welded or chained shut in 4 places max on 4-doors and 6 places max on 2-door vehicles – the door pads may be 4” x 4” max: chain must be min 5/16” single loop

4.      *From the center of Front wheels forward, from the ground to the top of the car, anything goes. Please cover heavy metal in front with something (tin, etc) so not visible to crowd

5.      *Motors may be secured in any fashion from the center of the front wheel forward – NO motor mounts shall extend to the rear past the center of the front wheel.  Transmission mounts may be altered.

6.      The hood may be secured in 4 places max with any of the following combinations:

a.       Single loop 5/16” chain

b.      ¾” threaded rod with 4”x4” max washers – may extend through frame

c.       3” angle, 4” long welded to hood and vehicle and bolted together.

7.      The trunk lid may be secured up to 4 places by any combination of the following:

a.       Single loop 5/16” chain

b.      ¾” threaded rod with 4”x4” max washers – may extend through frame

c.       3” angle, 4” long welded to hood and vehicle and bolted together.

8.      A 3” x ¼” max flat strap (or chain) CAN be run from the roof to the rocker on the inside center of the doors on 2 door cars for safety. No tubing, angle or channel.

9.      Cross-bracing may be installed behind the driver’s seat. The brace may be 4” max diameter with 6”x6”x1/4” plates on either end, cannot attach to trunk, tunnel, etc.

10.  A dash pipe is allowed – the brace may be 4” max diameter with 6”x6”x1/4” plates on either end.

11.  Sub-frames may be bolted up with ¾” max bolts in 4 places max. – One per side in front and one per side in back, no larger than 4”x4” washers may be used on bolts. Absolutely NO connection of front and rear frames by any means. No full framing

12.  Dash panel, battery box, gas tank, transmission cooler, etc. may be mounted anywhere inside car as long as they do not connect front and rear frames to each other.

13.  No seam welding body or frame

14.  No reinforcements of center hump except the factory shifter hole may be covered if not using. Cover can not exceed 3” past original hole.

15.  A radiator or radii barrel may be used in the stock position – the radii barrel may not exceed 3” outside thickness and must fit in between the frame rails.

16.  May put a strap across rear tail light lens holes but must leave inspection holes to view inside of trunk. Maximum 3” wide, 1/8” thick flat iron and cannot go more than 1” past either side of hole.

17.  Floor plates allowed only if original floor is gone; we will look at bottom side to verify. 1/8” thick max, must be flush to floor not raised to cover cheating. Floor plates cannot create full frame. No other plating allowed on/in car.

18.  Stock rear bumper only – may be welded on stock mounts only, no added metal or reinforcement. Or no bumper, but must remove mounting prongs.

19.  Airbags MUST be de-activated before race.

20.  Sedans are allowed 2 straps 3” wide by 1/8” thick over rear glass opening.
